Common Questions About Getting Started

Do I need prior experience to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

No. Most of our students start with zero experience. We teach fundamentals in every class, so beginners can jump right in and learn at their own pace.

What should I wear to my first BJJ class?

Just wear a t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants. Avoid zippers or metal. After your free trial, you'll need a gi for gi classes. We can help you pick one out.

What's included in the free week trial?

Unlimited access to all classes for 7 days. Try any adult or kids class—no strings attached. It's the best way to see if we're a good fit.

How often should beginners train?

Start with 2-3 times a week. That gives your body time to recover while building skills. You can always add more classes as you get comfortable.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu effective for self-defense?

Yes. We teach you skills that give you the confidence to avoid conflict. And if you ever need it, you'll know how to control a situation without throwing punches—using leverage and technique instead of strength.

What makes Blue Devil different from other gyms?

We blend American wrestling with traditional BJJ—you get the best of both. Strong takedowns, solid control, and techniques that actually work. Plus a clean gym, black belt instructors, and no contracts.

Can kids train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Absolutely. Our Kids BJJ program builds discipline, confidence, and anti-bullying skills. They learn self-defense without striking, plus life skills like respect and perseverance in a safe, fun environment.

Do you require contracts or long-term commitments?

No contracts. We do month-to-month memberships. You stay because you want to, not because you're locked in.
